HKMA to Enforce Crypto Banking Rules by 2026

Hong Kong’s Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced plans to implement Basel-aligned crypto banking rules by January 2026. This move aims to establish a robust regulatory framework for banks’ exposure to cryptoassets, impacting institutions handling Bitcoin and stablecoins.

HKMA, led by Chief Executive Eddie Yue, initiated this decision. It requires banks to hold $1 in capital for each $1 of volatile cryptoasset exposure. The strategy encourages using regulated stablecoins and tokenized real-world assets.

The announcement impacts Hong Kong’s financial institutions, influencing the types of cryptoassets they can hold. Lower capital requirements for regulated assets may shift market behavior towards more transparent and stable options, such as tokenized RWAs.
