Polymarket Faces Scrutiny as Prediction Markets Land Major Sports League Deals

Polymarket just jumped from crypto discourse into Major League Baseball’s official orbit, and that alone raises the stakes. MLB’s announcement is at https://www.mlb.com/press-release/press-release-mlb-names-polymarket-exclusive-prediction-market-exchange-partner-and-signs-agreement-with-cftc-to-establish-integrity-framework, and the CFTC’s roundtable page is at https://www.cftc.gov/PressRoom/Events/CommentsPredictionMarketsRoundtable, a pairing that turns a growth story into an oversight story fast.

MLB Put Polymarket on a Bigger Stage

MLB said it named Polymarket its “exclusive prediction market exchange partner,” and the same announcement says the league signed an agreement with the CFTC to establish an integrity framework. That is the real flashpoint: promotion on one side, guardrails on the other.

Crypto Briefing reported that Sportradar expanded its Polymarket deal to sports leagues. Even with limited detail in the research brief, that report points in the same direction as the MLB release: prediction markets are moving closer to mainstream sports distribution.

That momentum also fits Polymarket’s visibility push. TheCCPress previously reported $1B annualized revenue after a U.S. exchange launch, and an exclusive MLB partnership pushes the brand even further into the open.

The Scrutiny Is Part of the Deal

The CFTC’s prediction markets roundtable page shows the category is already on the agency’s agenda. When MLB’s own press release uses the phrase “integrity framework,” it signals that scrutiny is not some side plot trailing behind the deal.

Polymarket is not walking into that debate with a clean slate. TheCCPress has separately covered a reported broad CFTC probe, a lawsuit over a Strategy market, and criminal scrutiny in South Korea over election bets, which makes the MLB tie-up look less like a quiet sponsorship and more like a stress test.

There is the commercial push, then there is the integrity question. MLB is explicitly wrapping the partnership in an agreement with the CFTC, while the Sportradar report suggests broader sports distribution is still advancing.

Even Polymarket’s recent baggage hangs over the rollout. TheCCPress recently wrote about scrutiny after a reported exploit, and that context makes the mainstreaming described in the MLB announcement feel more combustible.

MLB has already put Polymarket inside an official partnership, and the CFTC already has prediction markets on its roundtable docket. If more leagues want in, who gets to define the next phase first, the partners chasing reach or the regulators chasing control?
