The US Navy Is Looking to Implement Blockchain Technology

BY Joshua Trelawen·2 MIN READ·SEPTEMBER 24, 2018

The USA government is showing further support towards blockchain technology. This is as a result of the US Navy teaming up with a tech company, ITAMCO. The collaboration between the two is going to explore the use of blockchain technology for the purpose of keeping track of aircrafts’ structural parts throughout its lifecycle.

Similar Incidents of Blockchain Technology Use, By The US Government

This is not the US Government’s first time of considering the use case of blockchain technology. Similar development finds NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) exploring the use of blockchain technology, in regards to procurement and logistics of military gadgets. There are also ongoing studies made by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) of the U.S. Department of Defense.

When it comes to implementing and exploitation of blockchain technology, the U.S.A, Russia and Chinese governments, seem to be expressing their interest the most.

ITAMCO News Release

According to the reports released, The Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) plans to track aviation parts using blockchain technology. This implementation is expected to further reduce the cost of running an operation. It is also going to further reduce the amount of resource consumed during the course of an operation.

The release states:
“Knowing the origin and history of flight-critical aircraft parts is a resource-consuming process that drives up the cost to operate military aircraft. The Navy hopes to change the way it tracks the lineage of parts.”

Furthermore, the Logistics Management Specialist George Blackwood from ISSC North Island Fleet Support Team said:

“The Navy is very excited to work with ITAMCO (Indiana Technology and Manufacturing Companies) on this cutting-edge technology to improve visibility, anti-tampering, traceability and data transparency in the NAVAIR supply chain.”

The Purported Benefits of The Collaboration

As a result of this collaboration, the Navy’s new blockchain aviation parts tracking model is going to uphold a permissioned protocol.
This permissioned protocol will make good use of a consensus algorithm with a requirement for a lower computing power.

Conclusively, this collaboration between the USA government and a tech company toward the development and implementation of a blockchain based technology is an indication of a brighter future for the entire blockchain community.
